When loading an existing directory into a wiki, if the sidebar has more than N items make the wiki collapsible by default (or suggest to do so)#575

Attached is an example of what I see in the left sidebar when I loaded an existing directory. This went on for a long number of rows.

Possibly a corner case because of the number of phone photos but it strikes me that other people could have a similar UX. Some directories don’t look good expanded by default, and fol those users they start off thinking “this looks like it will be hard to navigate”

I am a somewhat technical user who has used enosugh similar tools, and have enough persistence to think “maybe there is a collapsible option somewhere, let me go see” sure enough there was.

But most users will not think like me - it will not be obvious to them to think to find the settings page or that such a setting might exist. Many will just say to themselves “this is unusable” and not get the value they could out of the tool.

We could help these users by if the sidebar has say more than 100 rows making that wiki be collapsible by default. I would understand a concern about “will they understand the tree structure if we do this.” Maybe some one-time message could provide them guidance on the tree structure or clicking to expand. Or it could be expanded by default with a one-time “too crowded? click here to collapse all rows by default, you can always change this in settings” - I’m not a exactly UX designer so, these might both be bad options.
